ADLINGTON WINTER WARMER

27 Dec:    A decent VRAC turnout at the popular winter warmer a 10k (ish) multi terrain race along a canal tow path and the Middlewood Way, no watches or garmins etc are allowed and runners had to predict their finishing time and the nearest to their time was the winner. Amelia Pettitt was 1st VRAC and 1st lady (5th overall) with a cracking finish and took a few places in the home straight. Michael Harrington next up in 10th place with a strong run, then Stephen Thompson in 39th, Clara Pettitt in 60th, Claire Thompson in 74th and Richard Pettitt in 148th.

NORTH STAFFS XC Final Match - UTTOXETER

12 Dec:    Exceptionally wet and windy conditions for the final match of the north staffs xc series, the course was mainly flat but all racers were exposed to the elements, senior women 2 laps of the circuit and men 3 laps which were mainly
mud and flooded sections with a couple of segments where the grass was hardy giving your legs a well deserved rest from the mud. First up the women's race and Helen Smith didn't fail to deliver another W45 cat win and an amazing 14th placing, next up Sarah Gibbs who seemed to love it but confessed to starting off like a bolt and suffering later in the race, nethertheless a solid performance. Carole Williams wraps up the ladies contingent once again with another consistent sturdy performace! In the mens race the big guns up front Sam Whitehead (3rd) and Stu Doyle (7th) followed up by James Ainsworth as 3rd counter (44th). Chris Jones finishes off his xc series debut in style with another first class performance and 4th counter. Not far behind Tommy Armstrong & Matt Sweeting claiming the last two counters with strong performances placing us 4th team Division 1. Next up Mark Pilliner who has been shown a powerful consistency throughout the xc season come rain or shine. Last up John Clarke another sterling job even if he did wear an undershirt!

NATIONAL XC RELAYS - MANSFIELD

The senior women achieved a very credible 10th place thanks to the team of Katie Brough, Sarah Murphy and Amelia Pettitt. Meanwhile the B team of Kate Moulds, Kate Titlow and Carolyn Dooley came an excellent 37th out of 92 completing teams.

The senior men's team of Olly Williams, Stuart Doyle, Chris Perry and Ryan Moore managed a club record 31st place out of 149 finishers.  Full results are on the Sportsoft website.

25 Oct: An interesting mainly off road event. David Shepherd led VRAC home finishing an impressive 7th despite taking a wrong turn and losing over 4 minutes (and taking some VRACers with him like sheep!). He regained 25 places to finish one place behind where he was! Looks like a good battle between Nick Haywood and Ian Brough. And of course another ladies win for Gemma Barnett.

24 Oct: A 'wet and wild day' in keeping with this notoriously tough marathon. Sensational performances from two Snowdon Marathon stalwarts. Dave Murphy seems to love this race. He improved on previous smoking times with an outstanding Snowdon PB of 3 hours 23 minutes. Likewise Paul Clutterbuck set his sights on sub 4 hours and delivered with time to spare to record his own Snowdon PB.  Impressive or what?

A hilly and challenging course James was 4th counter for Chieshire.  A great run also from friend and rival Chris Jones who took got revenge for Staffs Common!

MANCHESTER LEAGUE RACE 2 - SHERDLEY PARK

7 Nov: Some heavy rain brought some extra challenge to the undulating course at Sherdley Park. As usual large fields in the ladies and mens races with some top quality athletes at the sharp end. Katie Brough was among the 3 ladies that broke away from the ladies field. A great work out and strong performance for Katie. Another excellent run for October Athlete of the Month Helen Smith winning her category. The ever reliable and consistent Carole WIlliams completed the ladies contingent. Another excellent turnout from the VRAC men (13 in all) posting strong placings for A and B teams and also A and B Vets teams. Full results here

NATIONAL XC RELAYS - MANSFIELD

30 Oct: A good day out for the seniors at Mansfield on Saturday against the top clubs in the country.

SNOWDONIA MARATHON

24 Oct: A 'wet and wild day' in keeping with this notoriously tough marathon. Sensational performances from two Snowdon Marathon stalwarts. Dave Murphy seems to love this race. He improved on previous smoking times with an outstanding Snowdon PB of 3 hours 23 minutes. Likewise Paul Clutterbuck set his sights on sub 4 hours and delivered with time to spare to record his own Snowdon PB.  Impressive or what?

LOCH NESS MARATHON

27 Sept: Brilliant performances from the Corinaldi family!! Here's Bob's report.

Loch Ness Marathon was a family affair. I only entered because Ashlin (Mrs C) had been convinced by a friend?? from Razzers that Loch Ness would be a perfect first marathon, my response being ' If I'm going all that way, might as well do it myself'....famous last words. They should make it more difficult to enter marathons online in future...  Then Katrina (young Miss C) got in on the act as she fancied it as well.

The weather forecast was perfect, cloudy and about 10oC, the reality was somewhat different, the sun came out and it was cracking the flags at the start, seems it was the beginning of a Highland Heatwave! The start is a long steep downhill and the theme continues throughout with quite a few sharp climbs (some quite long) along the way for good measure. After about 10 miles it felt like someone had taken a hammer to my quads.  All was still to plan (just) until about 17 miles when the 'monster' got me ( its a 2 mile climb ready for the 'sprint' to the finish at Inverness).  Looking at the splits I did a reasonable job getting up it but by mile 21 the circus music was playing and the wheels flew off in every direction which left me hanging on to the end.  I wasn't alone though as the course at this point was strewn with quite a few broken runners and even in my shattered state I found myself passing quite a few. I still managed to salvage a PB though, finishing in 3:34:58 at a hot n hilly Loch Ness from 3:36:22 at a flat & cool London.

The ladies did very well, apparently there's some lovely scenery along the route particularly the views at the start and across the loch although  I'll have to take their word for it.  I can't run and admire the view at the same time, blokes don't do multi tasking (not this one anyway). So that's definitely my last marathon...for 2015 anyway (the photograph of me after the finish should take care of that one).  Time to work on the Park Run (Got to keep Euan on his toes). PS: I'll have to have a chat with the youngster as 4:21 for a first marathon around that course is pretty impressive.

NORTH STAFFS XC - RACE 1 KNIGHTS GRANGE

26 Sept: Beautiful late summer weather (and no mud!) for the first N Staffs XC race hosted by VRAC.  Big thanks to the organisers and helpers.  Very large fields in the senior races. Just 3 VRAC senior ladies but all acquitting themselves well with Helen Smith posting 1st in her category. 17 senior men in a very high quality field. An excellent 3rd team position in Division 1. Some good battles throughout the field. Notably, XC débutante and new member Chris Jones having a great race and taking the bragging rights over friend and rival James Ainsworth. An even closer father/son battle with young Nathan Williams edging out Dad in a sprint finish with both awarded the same time! Great stuff.  Well done everyone. Let's keep it going for the rest of the XC season when the mud and rain arrives!

SANDSTONE TRAIL A AND B RACE

27 Sept: Summer like conditions for this years race. Some hot performances too. Gary Richardson has been steadily improving in training and this was reflected in an excellent race to lead home the 5 VRACers in the 17 mile A race. In the B race Gemma Barnett improved on her 3rd place last year to win the ladies race. Penny Thorn claimed 3rd lady and 1st L40. In form David Shepherd led home the mens contingent claiming 3rd M40.  For good measure VRAC also claimed the B race team prize. Good effort everyone.

ENGLISH HALF MARATHON - WARRINGTON

20 Sept: While some doubled up doing the road relays on Saturday and Sutton 6 on Sunday Euan Dunbar made a half marathon his second race of the weekend. A tough call.  Here's his report on proceedings:

"I only did it because when I did it last year it was the first half marathon I had ever done. It was 2 weeks later that I started going to VRAC. Had I known it was a completely different course to last year I probably wouldn’t have done it, anyway It was a race of 2 halves, if you look at the elevation you’ll see it was uphill for the first 6 miles and a horrible final hill at mile 10. Although it was 2mins slower than I was looking for it was 11mins quicker than last year!! Also It probably didn’t help doing the Road Relay at Blackpool yesterday afternoon , I didn’t finish until 4pm and the EHM started at 9am this morning."

SUTTON SIX 10K - GUILDEN SUTTON

20 Sept: A great overall race win for Stu Doyle following his exploits at the Northern Road Relays the previous day. James Ainsworth continues to make impressive progress to break through the 36 minute barrier for the first time. Mike Harrington was also doubled up this weekend having run at the road relays. Gemma Barnett clocked another sub 40 minute race to finish 3rd lady. Great to see Craig Sephton returning to the fray after his ankle break earlier in the year. The ever present Barry Chambers completed a good day for VRAC. Full results here.

NORTHERN ROAD RELAYS - BLACKPOOL

19 Sept: Excellent performances from the ladies and men's team yesterday which once again demonstrated great teamwork and integration between the older and younger members of the club. It was also impressive that despite fielding depleted teams in both events we still managed to achieve very competitive results emphasising our strength in depth. The ladies A team of Tess McCormick, Kate Moulds, Amelia Pettit and Kate Spilsbury took pride of place with 3rd place with Amelia managing to run the 4th fastest leg of the day to move the team from 11th into 3rd on leg 3. The men's A team of Matt Sheen, Sam Whitehead, Chris Perry, Stuart Doyle, George Thompson and Ollie Williams ran very consistently to finish 15th and easily qualify for next months National Relays in Birmingham. Not far behind in 53rd were the B Team of Nathan Tipping, Jon Chatten, James Griffiths, Matt Rowlinson, Dave Shepherd and Mike Harrington with some really solid runs. Meanwhile the C team of Tommy Armstrong, father and son duo Gareth and Nathan Williams (experience getting the better of youth on this occasion) Euan Dunbar, Brian Dooley and Geoff Fawkes greatly exceeded their own expectations by beating a significant number of teams in 88th - there were 102 complete teams. In addition to the undoubted quality it was great to get 18 male runners out in an event in which we'd frequently not fielded a singe complete team in the past!

GREAT NORTH RUN

13 Sept: Three VRACers made the trip North for the famous Great North Run. Sarah Murphy joined the elite ladies to start ahead of the masses. Amelia Pettitt and John Clarke joined the huge field. Fantastic time from Amelia Pettitt on what is thought to be her debut at the distance. She ran with the masses but her time would have placed her 9th in the Elite Ladies Race!

NORTH WEST ROAD RELAYS - ORMSKIRK

12 Sept: VRAC had strong teams out in both the Senior Men's and Ladies events at Ormskirk. The races were officially over a 5k course although the consensus was that it was actually c.3.2 miles which coupled with strong winds and a twisting although interesting and well set up course meant that times were generally about 45 secs down on normal 5k times.

The Senior ladies A team performed brilliantly to win the overall North West Champs out of 45 teams by a margin of 90 seconds. naturally they also won the incorporated Cheshire champs with their 3 runners occupying the top 3 slots in the fastest legs table. The team was Tess McCormick, Katie Gerrard and Kate Spilsbury. Meanwhile the B team of Chloe Broad, Lucie Burch and Emma Pyatt also ran very strongly to finish 21st overall and 4th cheshire Team whilst Kate Moulds and Carolyn Dooley made up an incomplete C team which had been in very close competition with the B team after their 2 legs.

The Senior Men fielded 3 teams of 4 blending youth and experience. The A team of Matt Sheen, Sam Whitehead, Stu Doyle and Ollie Williams managed a very creditable 7th overall and 1st Cheshire team out of a total of 75 teams with 9 from Cheshire. They were very ably backed up by the B team of George Thompson,James Ainsworth, Mike Harrington and Matt Rowlinson who managed 27th place overall and won the Bronze Cheshire medals. The club's contingent was completed by the C team of James Griffiths, Dave Shepherd, Euan Dunbar and Bryan Dooley ( edging Carolyn's time by 6 seconds!) who did superbly for a C team with 53rd place and 6th Cheshire team.
VRAC runners occupied 7 of the 10 fastest Cheshire legs including the top 3.

SOUTH CHESHIRE 20

6 Sept: Bob Corinaldi has been training hard for his forthcoming Loch Ness marathon. He only entered it because his wife had so he thought he 'might as well'! As part of his build up he did the South Cheshire 20. Here's his report. Looking good Bob. Don't forget to TAPER!!!

"Ran the South Cheshire 20 as a pre-Nessie training run on Sunday.  Ran with Joe from Razzers, he had a 'plan' which terrified me, run a negative split. Stuck with it and it worked a treat. Felt like a training run (which is what it was supposed to be)  and had plenty in the tank at the end."

ELGIN HALF MARATHON

6 Sept: Euan Dunbar likes to travel a long way away to avoid bumping into Bob Corinaldi :0). Here's his report from last weekends expedition.

"I ran in the Elgin Half Marathon yesterday. There were three events on one day (10k, half marathon and full marathon) All events started and finished in the setting of Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin and ran through some quiet scenic lanes and roads through Moray. The course was very undulating and was hampered by 19 - 25mph winds, nevertheless I did it in 95.21 and was MV50 – 4th."

6 Sept: Some excellent performances with 4 of the 7 VRACers registering PB's. Podium finish (3rd) and a big PB for James Ainsworth crashing through the 37 minute barrier. One place back and a PB for Ian Brough proving his fitness and pace is back. Gary Richardson completed a 1,2,3 clean sweep for the M40 category with his own PB. Gemma Barnett sneeked below 40 minutes to claim 2nd lady. Ian Barker claimed his own PB with Stephen and Claire Thompson rounding off proceedings nicely.

SOUTH CHESHIRE 5K SERIES RACE 3 - CREWE

25 Aug: Another great VRAC turnout for the 3rd and final race in this series. VRAC is pleased to welcome Chris Jones who was first unattached at Pie and Peas winning a years free membership to the club. Chris and in form James Ainsworth had a ding dong battle changing places several times but with Chris getting the bragging rights by 2 seconds. Another incredible run from young Edward Pettitt (in the U13 age group!) running a huge PB and breaking 18 minutes. Mike Harrington and Tommy Armstrong have had a good rivalry over the years and this time Mike Harrington took the honours. Likewise Sophie Smith and Gemma Barnett have been spurring each other to good performances and they finished 2nd and 3rd lady respectfully.  John Clarke retained his 100% record in the series winning the M60 category.  Well done all.

BIRCHWOOD 10K

23 Aug: Very hot and humid conditions for this years race made for some hard work and led to rather slower times than usual. An excellent 2nd lady finish for Sarah Murphy not far behind the winner. Also, a good category win for Helen Smith. Sula Stanley obviously loved the conditions with a superb PB of over 2 minutes! Sarah, Helen and Sula comfortably won the ladies team prize. Tony Atkinson continues his improvement and also logged a PB. Well done all.  PS: Well done to VRAC friend Helen Whitby running her first competitive 10k for 8 years and posting 41.32 and 7th lady.

CAPENHURST 5K

19 Aug: A night for the younger members of VRAC to shine. Although undoubtedly a flat course the times at Wednesday's Capenhurst weren't as quick as expected for the majority of competitors, possibly due to wet and quite windy conditions. Nevertheless there were still some excellent performances with pride of place going to Tess McCormick with 1st lady and a new course record to boot. Also showing admirable speed was Alex Hall who was right at the sharp end of a very good quality field. Meanwhile Matt Rowlinson demonstrated that he now has endurance to complement his undoubted pace by managing to beat some of his more experienced colleagues with an excellent PB. Additionally Steve Caldwell proved that marathon mileage doesn't have to lose your speed whilst Mike Harrington continued his return to form.

SALE SIZZLER 5K SERIES - RACE 4

6 Aug: Following a sub 30 min at the Pie and Peas the previous night another good run from in form James Ainsworth, July Athlete of the Month. Chloe Broad repeated her L17 category win from Race 2. Always a stickler for numbers Graham Miles managed to match his previous Sale Sizzler time (race 1) to the second! Good run from Helen Smith to gain 3rd in her category. Great to see racing stalwarts Richard Pettitt and Paul Hudson flying the colours  again for VRAC.

Footnote: Graham Miles spoils the above report by informing us he ran 18.49 not 19.08 as published. This was accepted by the organisers and the official results amended. Well done Graham!

PIE AND PEAS 5 MILE

5 Aug: Massively sold out, another hugely successful VRAC Pie and Peas event. A dull and damp evening saw a brilliant and wide range of runners attracted to the event. From seriously elite athletes (many from VRAC!) to those perhaps tackling the distance for the first time.  Huge credit to each and every runner, however fast they ran.

No less that 40 VRACers took part representing 11% of the field. The first 7 places went to VRAC with 1,2,3, going to the impressive U20 trio Bowker, Sheen and Betteley. Giving the 'lads' over 20 years a pretty impressive V40 came in 4th, Stu Doyle. VRAC ladies took 1,2,4, and 5 with excellent runs from Brough, McCormick, Murphy and Smith.  Many other excellent performances, too many to single out!  Well done runners, organisers and helpers. You all did VRAC proud.
Wins for both mens and ladies teams. Full list of prize winners on main VRAC website here.

ARLEY HALF MARATHON

UPDATE: More developments and revelations in this fast moving story. On learning the news about the Dunbar timing Mrs Corinaldi reported Bob was " ...in a state of shock. Mouth wide open and catching flies. Hilarious..." Clearly Bob was too shaken to communicate directly. In the interests of fair play Euan has now ignored his SNP handbook and called the race organiser to advise his time was a minute slower than reported and therefore behind that of Mr Corinaldi. Formal amendment of the results still awaited. MEANWHILE, Congratulations to SULA STANLEY who advised she too ran a PB and was 2nd F40 (12th lady overall). Watch this space for amended results if and when they appear!

2 Aug: A complicated story with sinister implications for Anglo - Scottish relations. Arch rivals Euan Dunbar and Bob Corinaldi are pushing each other to PB after PB. Euan's claim to Park Run supremacy last week based on his run in Aberdeen was promptly refuted by an indignant Bob as ineligible. The head to head at Arley was always going to be tense. Euan's flight from Aberdeen was cancelled forcing him to drive nearly 6 hours to arrive after midnight on race day. Being bitten by a horse fly during pre race ablutions added to Euan's woes, Nonetheless, he shot off at 6.36 min/mile pace leaving Bob in his wake. However... the wheels inevitably came off in the latter stages and master tactician Corinaldi overhauled him to take the honours. Big PB for both. Final twist in the tale... No chip time was published for Euan. After contacting the organisers he is strangely given a faster time then Bob and a couple of places ahead of him!!!!!!  Good job Sula Stanley had a good race and didn't get involved.

28 July: 5 of the 11 VRACers who ran race 1 on 30 June returned for the second race in the series and they ALL improved their times (Ainsworth, Sophie Smith, Barnett, Clarke, Lucy Smith). A fine run from Oliver tipping at the sharp end closely followed by Nathan Tipping with a big PB. Another nice dual between Sophie Smith and Gemma Barnett with Sophie turning the tables on Gemma versus race 1. John Clarke repeated his race 1 category win running nearly a minute faster in doing so. Keepit up for the next race in the series folks! Full results here.

BALLATER 10 MILE ROAD/TRAIL - SCOTLAND

26 June: Following 2 very hot weeks (warm weather training!) in Gran Canaria Euan Dunbar found himself in Aberdeen on business. Staying for the weekend he took in the Aberdeen Park Run taking 27 seconds off his PB clocking 20.12 (take that Bob Corinaldi!) and then proceeded to run the tough 10 mile race at Ballater. Here's how it went:

This is a brilliant scenic course on a mixture of road and trails but is infamous for it’s 2 horrendous hill climbs, the first at mile 3 is 508ft and the second is at mile 5 and is 919ft. Anyway I did a time of 1hr 9min 38secs, 30th overall and was MV50 - 5th. Just for comparison I ran this race in 2013 in a time of 1hr 24min 10secs ( it was the first race that I had ran in since I was at university 31years earlier). I didn’t run it last year as I was still getting over a double cartilage operation. Just shows what a new set of knees, joining VRAC last October and the encouragement of the senior section can do. Arley Hall half marathon next Sunday will be a breeze compared to this!!"

Just reward for Euan. We have all seen how he has progressed since he first joined us.

IRONMAN UK - BOLTON

19 July: Report from Jo Edwards and Tony Atkinson. Well done both!

Jo said she would never do another Ironman after the last one but when Tony announced that he wanted to do one she thought the only way she was going to see him for the next 6 months was to do it with him. Jo advised that they go for the practice swim on the Friday afternoon as Tony was very anxious (to say the least, he hadn't spoken for about 4 weeks and they had ran out of toilet roll) about this part of the event. On approaching Pennington Flash they could here waves breaking on the shore and wind surfers! This didn't do Tony's bowels any good at all. Practice swim survived, it was soon race morning, to Tony's relief a new rolling start. Jo equally anxious as she had been nursing a head cold for 3 days. The swim went well for both, a bit choppy with heavy rain, thunder and lightening, a bit faster for Jo this year. Onto the bike which was wet, windy and a very poor road surface which felt like it went on forever. Tony overtook Jo at the foot of Sheephouse Lane, grinning now relieved he didn't drown, much to Jo's surprise,(that never happens). The bike was extremely hard due to strong wind but thankfully no disasters. Onto the short run, took a while to realize that your legs did actually belong to you, eventually. Once in Bolton the crowds lifted your spirits to keep you going, and with plenty of time left to complete it. The finish line was lovely to see, Tony had done his first Ironman and Jo her second and not keeled over from her cold. There will be another Ironman definitely, but it will be somewhere warm, picturesque and FLAT!

23 July: Good conditions for the 3rd race in the series. An excellent run from Oliver Williams at the sharp end. In form James Ainsworth has put on some serious training according to Strava and was rewarded with a 36 second PB (set at Christleton earlier in the year).  Good to see Mike Harrington back on the race trail with a solid run. Excellent category win for Chloe Broad just 5 seconds outside her PB set at Kingsley in the spring.  Great to see Paul Hudson racing again as he continues his comeback from long term injury. Finally, special mention and credit to Barry Chambers. We are 30 weeks into 2015 and, including Park Runs, this was Barry's 36th race of the year!! What a racing legend for VRAC.

Good (all male!)turnout from VRAC for this interesting mainly off road 4.7 miler.  A nice summers evening saw some good performances and cries of 'we was robbed' as VRAC should have been awarded the team prize which strangely went to host club Wilmslow!  Moral victory.
