Athlete of the Month (AOM) is awarded each month to
the VRAC athlete who has delivered outstanding performances relative to
their potential and their previous performances. Any member can put
forward a nomination for AOM verbally to the mens or ladies captain or
by emailing [email protected].
Nominations must be received by the 5th of the following month. The
judging panel will assess the nominations and select the award winner
who will be published on the VRAC Seniors website.
Where to start? November saw international honours for Sarah Muphy, Stu Doyle and Liz Renondeau at the British and Irish Masters XC; County honours for Chris Williams, James Ainsworth and Helen Smith at Abergele 5; a rash of PB’s at Wilmslow 10k with Andrew Miles just missing sub 33 mins. David Shepherd continuing his run of form along with the rapidly improving Robert Roe (2 PB’s). Resurgent Rob Olliver and Tony Archer cross country. In the end AOM was a close call between two ladies. Huge credit to Lucy Knight for her steady improvement and regular racing over recent months and her 10k PB at Wilmslow. However, by a short head this months award goes to a lady who delivered 4 excellent races in November, 3 xc and a 10k PB at Wilmslow. November AOM is HOLLIE CARRINGTON.
October had many worthy AOM candidates. Collectively VRAC men and women clinched team victories in the Cheshire Road Race Grand Prix. Rob Olliver made an impressive return to XC racing; Brian Dooley and Robert Roe with PB's at Manchester half marathon; David Shepherd in great form at Sandstone and Haloween Hellraiser; David 'Spud' Murphy with yet another excellent Snowdon marathon; ex junior Hollie Carrington returning as a senior, with husband Lee, both with impressive XC performances. Then of course there was Colin Rathbone's Chester marathon with a cool 3 hour 36 mins in the M70 category! After much debate we have recognised two prolific lady racers. One received an international call up for the Chester marathon. The other was first lady at Winsford 10k, a category winner at Farndon 10k and 1st lady at Haloween Hellraiser. Joint October AOM's are MARY TAVENER and GEMMA BARNETT.
Plenty of great racing in September of varying distances and surfaces. Races on trails, cross country, road and fells and even a Parkrun in Italy thrown in. Great turnout and performances at the North West and Northern road relays with the men qualifying for the National Championships. The athlete we have singled out ran for the Mens B team at the Northern Relays making a point by running faster than 3 of his A team colleagues. He also took nearly 2 minutes off his 10K PB at Sutton 6 running 34.20 (which according to Power of 10 is 1 second quicker than his Dad's PB!). September AOM is ANDREW MILES.
August was a busy racing month with many excellent performances. To name just a few we saw big improvements and PB's from Tony Dutton and Lucy Knight; another great month from Nathan Williams and Mike Harrington; an impressive ultra debut from David Shepherd and the completion of 365 consecutive days of running and 3000 miles from Dave Gough. Not easy to choose AOM then! However, this month we agreed it should go to an athlete that is a worthy AOM candidate most months. In August his 9.16 over 3000m on the track ranked him 5th M45 in the UK and his Mid Cheshire 5k placed him 11th. Add to this a great Pie and Peas race. August AOM goes to our erstwhile Club Chairman 'Big Stu' Doyle.Click to edit text

A multitude of races in June of varying distance, surface and terrain. James Ainsworth had another stella month racing prolifically and extremely well. Despite work and family commitments Chris Jones also stepped up running his first sub 36 10k at Warrington. Helen Smith and Carolyn Dooley also picked up well deserved Cheshire vests at Stone 10k. However the June award goes someone who also raced prolifically picking up the M45 title for the North Cheshire 5k series and running his first sub 10 minute 3k on the track. June AOM is MIKE HARRINGTON.
After a quiet winter by his standards he still managed to pull out a magnificent 3.41 at The Flying Fox Marathon for an age category win. Another age category victory at the Much Wenlock Half as well as a storming leg at the recent Vets Relays means that the May Athlete Of The Month award goes to Colin Rathbone.
Another good month. On the back of her excellent form on the country Jodie Thompson earned Cheshire selection. Chris Jones and James Ainsworth pushed each other to 5 mile PB's at Alsager. Helen Smith clinched 1st L45 for the MACCL series. Chris Swift PB'd at Wrexham half which also saw an encouraging run from Katie Brough in her marathon build up. However let's recall May 2015 when Craig Sephton was 1/2 mile from home on a long training run when he stepped off the kerb and badly fractured his ankle. His running and triathlon ambitions for the forthcoming year were shattered in an instant. But... he was determined to carefully manage his way back to full competitive fitness. Nearly 2 years on it is fantastic to see him back to his best. A brilliant 2+ min PB at Wrexham half. CRAIG SEPHTON is February AOM.
A lot of good stuff in January with Sophie Rees completing her 13 half marathons in 13 weeks; Numerous excellent performances at Helsby half including Chris Standidge, Rick Murray and Natasha Smith. A big month for cross country with Cheshire Champs, Manchester League and the Northerns. Again many creditable performance here but two ladies stood out. Sarah Murphy 2nd lady and 1st F35 at Cheshire Champs and 12th lady and 1st F35 at Northerns. Helen Smith 1st F45 at Cheshire Champs, Manchester League and Northerns. Both fully deserving of recognition as joint Athletes of the Month.January AOM's SARAH MURPHY and HELEN SMITH
Apart from some excellent race performances a key highlight for us all in December was to see the return of EUAN DUNBAR achieving his ambitious goal to run the Christmas Day parkrun. Inspirational. On the racing front we saw a great XC debut from LIZ GALE at Staffs Common, BARRY CHAMBERS completing the Boxing Day Round the Walls race being one of only three people to have done all the RTW races. We also saw MIKE HARRINGTON break through the 36 minute barrier for 10k. However, December is a favourite month for one member who loves cross country. With strong performances in Manchester and North Staffs leagues and a call up for N Wales our December AOM is GARETH WILLIAMS.
Deciding November AOM has been super tough! Stu Doyle had another terrific month cross country with International honours at the Masters XC Glasgow and 1st M45 at Cross Challenge. Rick Murray and Carolyn Dooley continued their excellent form both going sub 40 minutes at 10k. Brian Dooley broke through the 1.30 half marathon barrier last month and continued this month with a superb sub 40 min PB at Tatton 10k. Julie Annable has been patiently progressing after serious injury. Her cross country performances this month were outstanding in the Manchester League and the British Master XC relays. November AOM’s are:
BRIAN DOOLEY AND JULIE ANNABLE.
October was quite a month with many worthy candidates for AOM. Over 13.1 miles Mr and Mrs Dooley and Chris Griffiths all excelled at the Manchester and Stu Doyle won overall at Congleton' Gemma Barnett had female wins at Winsford 10k and Haloween Hellraiser. A resurgent Tom Annable 7th at Sandstone Trail and Kate Titlow cracking 40 minutes for 10k at Farndon. There were two more candidates we just couldn't split for AOM this month. Chris Jones has been running some great races for a while. In October he smashed the Manchester half going sub 1.20 for the first time. He also got a worthy Cheshire selection at Abergele 5. The whole of the men's team were superb at Northern XC relays where Matt Sheen ran a stunning final leg to claim team Bronze in the final 400m. Matt also placed 6th in a high quality field at Manchester League XC. In fact Matt has been the fastest VRAC runner in every one of the road and XC relay events. October AOM's are Matt Sheen and Chris Jones.
|September 2016||Amelia Pettitt, Sarah Griffiths, Sarah Murphy||Some good individual performance in September. Great to see Steve Caldwell and Craig Sephton progressing after injury at the Sutton 6. Chris Jones and James Ainsworth had another ding dong battle spurring them to good times at Sanbach 10k, Road relays figured highly with some tremendous team performances throughout VRAC at the NW Road Relays and Northerns. For their exceptional performance winning the Ladies NW Road Relay by over 4 minutes this months AOM goes to the Ladies A team: Amelia Pettitt, Sarah Griffiths and Sarah Murphy.|
|August 2016||Nathan Williams||A very busy August on the racing front! Some excellent performances from many VRAC athletes including continued improvements from Matt Rowlinson, Cheshire vests James Ainsworth, Mike Harrington, Sarah Murphy and Helen Whitby, A win for Gemma Barnett at Leek and a great Ultra debut for Bob Corinaldi. However, as we bid farewell to one younsgter heading Bristol Uni we recognise another intensive racing month with 5 high quality races . August Athlete of The Month isNATHAN WILLIAMS.|
|July 2016||Carolyn Dooley||An interesting month with some wide ranging performances. Amy Hinchley ran in uk u20 welsh athletics outdoor international. Ric Murray had another good month. Matt Rowlinson had a great 5k at Crewe. Gary Richardson continued his form with a PB at Arley half marathon. Oliver Williams clocked a 5k sub 16 PB at Sale Sizzler. However, this month Mr and Mrs Dooley fight it out for Athlete of the Month just as they do in races. Both had excellent half marathon debuts at Arley and it?s another narrow win for Mrs D. July Athlete of the Month isCarolyn Dooley.|
|June 2016||James Ainsworth|| |
June was a busy month with 15 race reports to consider. It was another strong month for Mike Harrington, Chris Jones and Stu Doyle. However, there was a striking theme of several athletes making strong comebacks following injury. Tommy Armstrong raced 4 times and showed good progress. Tom Annable enjoyed similar progress over several races. However by a narrow margin, following several excellent races, in particular Crewe 5k and Colshaw 10k, where he once more moved up the leaderboard June Athlete of The Month goes to JAMES AINSWORTH.
|May 2016||Mike Harrington|
It's been a busy and excellent racing month over various terrains and distances up to 33 miles (Nick Haywood and Sophie Rees). A memorable day at the Vets relays with some superb individual and team results. A massive turnout at Christleton 5k with many PB's. Zack Bamber continued to show his talent winning the Round the Runway and 3rd at Dovestone All Terrain race. Paul Hudson raced home and abroad. However, one individual managed to squeeze in 5 races during the month running consistently well in all of them and was within a second of breaking 17 minutes for 5k when setting a new PB. May Athlete of the month is the prolific MIKE HARRINGTON
| April 2016|| Ian Brough|| |
Many worthy candidates following outstanding performances including London and Manchester marathons. Recent AOM Rick Murray shone at Wilmslow half, London marathon and Mid Cheshire 5k! Big Stu took the VRAC marathon record at Manchester. Terrific marathon PB's and debuts for Chris Jones, Gemma Barnett, Helen Smith, Chrs Swift, Nikki Cavanagh and Carole Williams. However, after much debate we have decided the award goes to a sensational performance at London breaking through the 3 hour barrier. April AOM is IAN BROUGH.
|March 2016 || Amelia Pettitt|| |
There was a wide range of racing types, distances and locations in March. Road, fell, XC, track and field; various distances up to marathon and locations in England, Wales, Scotland, Spain and Italy (and we had Ireland in February)!! Special mention to Chris Jones' excellent PB at Stafford Half Marathon and Gary Richardson's debut marathon in Barcelona. However, one individual stood out. She has delivered some exceptional races over the past season and continued in March with a 4th GB place at the World University Championships (she goes to Newcastle) and then winning the Isle of Man running festival. March Athlete of the Month is AMELIA PETTITT.
|February 2016||Ladies XC Team|| Some very worthy performances in February including a 10k PB for David Shepherd, a great individual performance from Stu Doyle at the National XC and 3 PB's at Helsby half for Ian Brough, Ian Barker and Chris Swift. However, something very special happened this month. VRAC's first ever seniors team medal with the ladies winning a superb bronze at the National XC Championships. The seniors squad in order of placing was Amelia Pettit, Sarah Murphy, Kate Spilsbury, Kate Titlow, Kate Moulds, Sarah Griffiths, Kerry Riley and Jayne Lomax. Whilst the first 4 counted for the team we have decided the entire squad deserves AOM recognition. Well done ladies VRAC is very proud of you.|
| Many, worthy candidates over XC and on the road. Helsby half saw 8 PB's from the 15 VRACers. Amelia Pettitt was outstanding at the Northern XC (with a subsequent England call up). Sarah Murphy and Helen Smith also had a terrific month. Mike Harrington ran two brilliant XC races and, of course, Stu Doyle excelled again. Unusually this month there are two AOM's. Both are individuals who are committing themselves to marathon training and showing huge progress. The AOM lady took over 15 mins off her PB at Helsby and the gentleman took over 11 mins off his. The joint January AOM's are Sarah Gibbs and Rick Murray.|
|December 2015||Gareth Williams|| More good performances from in form Helen Smith, James Ainsworth and Sarah Murphy. However, this month we recognise the progressive improvement of a talented and long standing member/friend of VRAC. He loves the 'country' and has moved up the field over the 2015/16 season winning an epic battle with club mates to be first counter at muddy Boggart Clough. Son Nathan is keeping him on his toes too! December AOM is Gareth Williams.|
|November 2015||Barry Chambers|| |
Some good performances in Novemember including impressive races for Chris Jones at Langley 7 and Park Hall XC, David Shepherd at Park Hall and Petzl Night 10k and Carolyn Dooley at Cheshire 10k. However this month we had to recognise a fantastic milestone of 250 Park Runs accumulated at over 50 locations. November Athlete of the Month is BARRY CHAMBERS.
|October 2015||Helen Smith|| |
Fantastic runs from our two Snowdon Marathon warriors. David 'Spud' Murphy with a big Snowdon PB and Paul Clutterbuck comfortably under his 4 hour target. But some committed training on the track rewarded with a 10k PB and category win at Farndon and an another excellent XC race at Staffs Common means AOM this month goes to HELEN SMITH.
|September 2015||Ryan Stringer|| A long list of nominees including Gemma Barnett for two wins this month,Katie Brough for a great win at Salford, Bob Cornialdi's marathon PB at Loch Ness and Amelia Pettitt's PB's at both 10k and half marathon. However, we have to recognise the fine achievements of a talented sprinter who this month broke the long standing club record for 200m in 22.7s at the final Cheshire League meet at Salford.....the September Athlete of the Month Award goes to RYAN STRINGER!|
|August 2015||Alex Hall||An early bid for the title this month came from Sula Stanley who posted a big PB at the Arley Half Marathon. We also have to recognise the achievements of John Clarke who despite his injury troubles posted a clean sweep of age category victories in the Cheshire 5 K series. The number of great performances Pie and Peas meant we couldn't separate out the contenders - though there were many! So for very fine running at the front of the field in the Ellesmere 10k and Capenhurst 5K, the August Athlete of the Month is ALEX HALL!|
|July 2015||James Ainsworth||A number of high finishes for our talented younger seniors! A win for Alex Hall at Cheadle and both Sophie Smith and Oliver Williams with 2nd places in the South Cheshire 5K. Katie Brough had a good win at Sizzler #1 and Stu Doyle was in the top places at the Wizard. A mention too for the personal achievement completing an Ironman for Jo Edwards. But it had to his month this time.....for breaking the 17 minute 5K barrier at Sale Sizzler #2, the July Athlete of the Month is JAMES AINSWORTH!|
|June 2015||Gemma Barnett||Our club captain Stu Doyle had another fantastic month including a stage win & course record at the Castles and fine runs over 10k too. (The whole castles team could have taken the award!) However, we set the bar very high for Stu so not this month! Another contender is Euan Dunbar who has raced prolifically and shown great form. (The Toughie award goes to Dave Shepherd for his trail half marathon!) But for her victories at the South Cheshire 5K and Colshaw 10K the Athlete of the Month for June goes to GEMMA BARNETT!|
|May 2015||Steve Caldwell||Outstanding month this time with great performances from Elliot Bowker and Tess McCormick at Christleton, a fine run from Debbie Moreton at Chester Half and a win for Gemma Barnett at Much Wenlock. However, there was no doubting this months winner after a sub hour run at 10 miles, breaking 17 minutes for 5k and winning the Cheshire 1500m championships. The May Athlete of the Month award goes to STEVE CALDWELL!|
|April 2015||Angie Channing||An absolutely impossible decision this month! All our marathoners had battles & tales to tell, ran unbelievably well and deserved to win the award. Over shorter distances, Steve Caldwell had two impressive PBs including sub-60 over 10 miles. Euan Dunbar also had two fantastic PBs over 10k. Amelia Pettit had a great victory and PB at the Crewe 10k. So who would you have chosen? This month we choose to recognise the superb debut over the marathon and the smashing of her race target. The April Athlete of the Month is ANGIE CHANNING!|
|March 2015||Tom Annable||We're waiting for the right moment to recognise James Ainsworth's big improvements - and it was close this time with his big PB at Wilmslow (Stu Doyle and Sarah Gibbs too had excellent PBs). Dave Shepherd had a superb and exciting run at the Nitro 10K night run for a top-3 finish. But for his returning form & fitness in endurance runs at Dentdale & Trimpell and then turning out for the 12-stage relays, the March Athlete of the Month is TOM ANNABLE!|
|February 2015||Carole Williams||The standout club performance this month was the Amelia Pettitt's medal win in the junior National XC Champs (See the main club website). However, for the seniors we had several contenders. Ian Brough (Wrexham) , Euan Dunbar (Wrexham), James Ainsworth (Alsager) and Chris Griffiths (Mad Dog 10k) all had excellent PB's on the road. However, this month we are recognising the prolific XC racing performances and her superb half marathon PB at Wrexham - the February Athlete of the Month is CAROLE WILLIAMS!|
|January 2015||Colin Rathbone||Two main contenders this month (we ruled out the Helsby unofficial PB for Chris Beard!). A brilliant win for Sarah Murphy at the Cheshire XC Champs was deserving of our award but we chose instead to recognise determination in the face of adversity (he's been ill most of the month!) and winning age category runs at the Northerns, Twin Piers and Heaton Park. The January Athlete of the Month award goes to COLIN RATHBONE!|
|December 2014||Tony Archer||A couple of near misses this month: Sarah Murphy's run at the Yule Yomp winning the ladies race and helping VRAC to the team prize and James Ainsworth for the Yule Yomp 7th place and strong XC performances. However for achieving 2nd M60 at the Manchester League, 1st M60 at the final N Staffs league race at Leek (and overall winner) and 1st M60 at the Chester Round the Walls Race the December Athlete of the Month is TONY ARCHER!|
|This month the strong senior contender was Bob Corinaldi for his very strong run at Stowmarket (and his new pre-race routine!). However, we have to recognise that last weekend the club and two fantastically talented runners achieved something very special! Showing hard work, grit and determination and an ability to run super fast in the European XC trials, the November Athlete of the Month Award goes to GB athletes MIKE VENNARD and ELLIOT BOWKER!|
|October 2014||Sula Stanley||Several noteworthy mentions this month: Iain Stanton's welcome return to racing cross-country after his horrific injury, Bob Corinaldi's big PB at the Farndon 10k, Gemma Barnett's Hellraiser win, James Ainsworth's cross-country performances and the Snowdon marathon performances of Paul Clutterbuck and Dave Murphy. However, for a massive 30 min PB at the Chester Marathon and recognition of her massive progress, the Athlete of the Month award for October goes to SULA STANLEY!|
|September 2014||Sophie Rees||Strong contenders again this month: Elliot Bowker (6th fastest at Northern Road Relays), Rob Olliver (4th at Sandstone Trail) and Gemma Barnett (3rd Lady at Sandstone Trail). However for her determined comeback from long term injury and commendable performances at South Cheshire 20, Long Sandstone Trail and Macc half - the latter 2 in consecutive days - the September Athlete of the Month is SOPHIE REES!|
|August 2014||David Shepherd||For great performances at Capenhurst (PB!) and good runs at the Marbury 5.3k and the Crewe 5K series, we had no arguments on the way to declaring the August AThlete of the Month to be DAVID SHEPHERD!|
|July 2014||Stu Doyle||Plenty of great performances to choose from in July: Sophie Rees back racing at Great Warford, Tess McCormick 3rd at the Crewe 5K, Jo Edward's ironman and Rob's PB over 5K at the Sale Sizzler. We usually find reasons not to give him the Athlete of the Month as he achieves so much, but this month we had to give in! For 2 successive PB's at 3000m on the track. 1st overall at Wizard. 2nd overall and 1st M40 at Gt Warford 10m, the July Athlete of the Month is STU DOYLE!|
|June 2014||Alex Mason||Oh so close for Gemma Barnett (Welsh Castles yellow), Dave Phillips (multiple races including Welsh Castles and 2nd in Tough Team!), James Ainsworth (PB at Arley),Debbie Moreton (PB at Arley) and Amelia Pettitt (1st lady Crewe 5k)! A special mention too for Craig Sephton's European triathlon. However, for his superb ultra-endurance efforts in the Endure 24, the June Athlete of the Month Award goes to Alex Mason!|
|A very strong run with some great performances and PBs at Christleton (Chris/James/Mike). Colin had another jaw-dropping, age defying performance at the Flying Fox Marathon. However, we recognise both our Championship medal winning and record breaking mens sprint performance as well as the 3rd fastest overall time at the Ladies Masters Relays (+ ladies 5K record!). The joint May Athletes of the Month are RYAN STRINGER and VAL DUNN!|
|Marathon Month! This year we couldn't separate two cracking performances in separate marathons. The first was a club age category record on her debut at London and the second was a superb PB at the Manchester Marathon.|
|March 2014||Colin Rathbone||It is measure of Rob Olliver's improvement that a 2:51 marathon does not win him AOM! Other fine contenders in James Ainsworth for several strong performance (hopefully leading to a great marathon) and Chris Perry for his sub 32 minute 10k. But for winning the Northern Vet's 10 mile championship and being the champion of team athletics events, the March Athlete of the Month is COLIN RATHBONE!|
|February 2014||Carole WIlliams||Fantastic performances from Katie Brough at Alsager and the nationals and big improvements from Nik Haywood at Oulton Park meant they could easily have won. However, for an excellent showing in the Manchester XC league and Wrexham half marathon, the February Athlete of the Month is CAROLE WILLIAMS!|
|January 2014||Helen Smith & Steve Caldwell||A lot of racing in January meant a tough decision again! Greats PB's at the Helsby half marathon and strong performances at the very muddy Northern Cross Country Champs - in both the mens and ladies races - mean that once again we have joint winners! The January Athlete's of the Month are HELEN SMITH and STEVE CALDWELL!|
|December 2013||Chris Standidge||The December athlete of the month was nearly given to Tony Archer for many great park runs in NZ but as the park runs don't count we had to look elsewhere!! Two close condenders in Tess McCormick, finishing 1st lady in the Round the Walls race, and Chris Perry, running the fastest 10k for some years by a club member at Ribble Valley. However, the award for December is given to a new member who ran a terrific 10 mile a Stockport.....the December Athlete of the Month is CHRIS STANDIDGE!|
|November 2013||Jade Evans||Paul Hudson has continued to improve throughout the year and his strong showing at Stockport meant he was a strong contender this month. However, for her excellent runs over the country at North Staffs and Manchester leagues as well as her valuable team contribution at the National XC relays, the November Athlete of the Month goes to JADE EVANS.|
|October 2013||John Todd||Very strong performances from Rob Olliver, Gemma Barnett and Katie Brough would make them worthy winners too! However, for his fastest half marathon in many years at Congleton, age category wins at the Halloween Hellraiser and at Sandbach, the October Athlete of the Month goes to JOHN TODD!|
|It's great to see so many performances making the judging very tough every month! If Rob and Gemma hadn't got the award last month they would have been contenders this month. But we have singled out a member of the amazing Ladies Senior Road Relay team who medalled in the Northern Champs (all deserve an award) who also had a terrific run at Guilden Sutton! However, in the spirit of previous months we couldn't choose a sole winner we recognise this athlete's terrific performance on the country and the road with a 3rd place at Winsford and a 10K PB. The joint winners of the September Athlete of the Month are KATE MOULDS and DAVE SHEPHERD!|
|Yet again you have made it tough for us to decide and we've had to give the award to two excellent athletes!|
|Another very tough month to make a clear decision so we have decided that we have joint winners - both on the track! For a superb performance in getting amongst the medals at the UK Championship 5K, the first winner is the talented new member KATIE BROUGH.|
|June 2013||Mel Johnson||Jayne Lomax's 3 personal bests and Jo Edwards V50 victory in North Cheshire GP series were strong contenders for this month's award. However for her outstanding perfomances and her overall victory in the series, the Athlete of the Month for June is MEL JOHNSON!|
|May 2013||Mary Tavener||Two strong runs over 5K nearly won the award for to Mel Johnson. Dave Shepherd's Chester Half performance was also in the running as well as the big 5K PB's for Bob Corinaldi and Paul Hudson....however, the jury was unanimous in recognising Mary's victory in Galway, as well as her Club LV50 record at Chrisleton and her solid performance at the Edinburgh Marathon. The May Athlete of the month is MARY TAVENER!|
|April 2013||Tommy Armstong||Although there were many fine performances in the perfect conditions at London this year - including fantastic debut marathons for Helen, Ian and Gemma - this time there was one run that stood out....with a perfectly paced, reverse split and a breakthrough performance in breaking the 2:50 barrier, the Athlete of the Month for April is TOMMY ARMSTRONG!|
|March 2013||Stu Doyle||March?cold weather and sizzling performances! Tommy Armstrong PB?s at 20m/10k; Jacky Thorn fastest 10k since 2006 and 2 L55 wins; Sophie Rees defied injury to shine in her debut marathon in Barcelona; Zack Bamber and Amelia Pettitt excelled at Air Products 10k and Rob Oliver delivered on his training improvement with a huge 10k PB. However, with no less than two sub 33 min 10k?s, a half marathon PB and a brilliant 4th place at the National Masters XC the March Athlete of the Month is: STU DOYLE|
|Feburary 2013||Jodie Spencer||Several worthy contenders this month including James Griffiths (National XC) Tommy Armstrong (Wrexham Half & Alsager 5) and Bob Corinaldi (big PB at Wrexham Half). However, for her strong showing in the very tough conditions at the National XC, as well as her support to the ladies senior team the February Athlete of the Month is the talented JODIE SPENCER!|
This month's decision has been an extremely difficult one and even after significant levels of debate across the committee it has proved impossible to separate 3 of the contenders.
Sula and Debbie have demonstrated exceptional commitment and enthusiasm since joining the club and have prospered despite some of their first races have been in some of the toughest conditions seen in Cross Country events in recent years.
Craig's dedication and commitment has been rewarded with constant improvement and his performances in January were quite probably his best yet in a VRAC vest. He is the epitome of the saying ?when the going gets tough?.
|December 2012||Dave Phillips||A close call this month with worthy contenders Tommy Armstrong (10k PB) and Carole William (vets winner at North Staffs XC) just being pipped for the decision. For excelling going uphill at the Leek XC match and downhill in the Jubilee plunge, the final winner of 2012 and the December Athlete of the Month is DAVE PHILLIPS!|
|November 2012||Kate Moulds||Another strong month with Dave Williams epic fell racing performances and continuing improving form for Jo Edwards, it took something special to win. However, for superb cross-country running leading to a top-10 finish and showing the way for the strong senior ladies team at the Manchester League, the Athlete of the Month for November is KATE MOULDS!|
|October 2012||Ian Brough||A number of contenders this month with Bob Corinaldi's massive marathon PB at Chester, strong road performances by Jackie Thorn and Tom Armstrong as well as some superb performances off-road from Dave Philips and Alex Mason. All performances that deserve an award but, for a superb run on a very tough Snowdonia marathon course, the October Athlete of the Month instead goes to IAN BROUGH|
|September 2012||Tessa McCormick||For a superb win at the Guilden Sutton 10k, a terrific 2nd place finish in the 1st NSCC cross-country and a cracking relay leg in the Northerns, the September Senior Athlete of the Month is Tessa McCormick! (Although nominated for the junior AOM she was racing against the seniors and so qualified for the senior award too!)|
|August 2012||Tony Archer||Category wins at Capenhurst 5K and at Pie and Peas.|
|July 2012||John Thompson||For terrific performance on the trails at the Wizard 5, on the fells at Great Hucklow and on the road at Great Warford and for maintaining his lead in the endurance championship|
|Stu Doyle||For a fantastic national vets 5k championship win and 5 age category wins!|
|May 2012||Scott Bamber||Another very tough decision this month! With Helen Smith's 1:32 and Ian Brough's fantastic PB at Chester Half marathon, as well as Stu Doyle's impressive PB's at 5k and 10k, it took something special to win this month! So for a superb PB over 5 miles, May's Athlete of the Month is SCOTT BAMBER!|
|Apr 2012||Dave Haines||It's great to have such a tough decision on our hands after some superb performances in April. Dave Phillips had a superb run at the tough Three Peaks Race. Several great performances at London including those by Tom Armstrong (2:55 and reverse split) and Pauline Davies (Cheshire LV60 Record). However, with a London performance that had everyone talking and great runs in the NW relays and Spring 5, April's winner was DAVE HAINES!|
|Mar 2012||Bob Corinaldi||For two PB's including Wilmslow Half Marathon!|
|Feb 2012||Ben Carter||For excellent PB at Alsager!|

|Nov 2011||Stuart Doyle||Fantastic England debut in the Master's International|
|Oct 2011||Dave Murphy||For superb runs at Snowdonia Marathon and Sandstone Trail.....|
|Sept 2011||Steve Caldwell|
For the second time in recent months, the Athlete of the Month award goes to STEVE CALDWELL. This time an 8 minute improvement on his half marathon PB whilst competing in the Great North Run helped him win the award! Well done Steve!
|Diane Newsham||For continuing to improve and for a superb prize winning performance at Run Winsford 10k|
